"Mylan Engel wrote a fantastic paper (albeit about childhood starvation) about how we are in fact morally obligated to donate to relief funds based on (in his words) beliefs we already hold. I highly recommend it. "Hunger, Duty and Ecology: On What We Owe Starving Human Beings" #morals #poor #needy #charity #pub
Interesting that I thought the ALS ice bucket challenge had peaked at least a week ago yet they are saying they only had $22M in donations a week ago around August 19th and now they have $88M on August 26. Or around $9M average per day in the past week. Even if this was the peak, that's still interesting how much higher this week has been. #charity #culture #interesting #issues #numbers #trends #viral #pub
"While everyone re-lives that great Internet moment when all the world joined together to bully a 13 year old girl, let's review some facts: - Rebecca Black became a millionaire not long after offering Friday for sale on iTunes. She then became a former millionaire by donating everything she made to Japan for earthquake relief efforts. - Since recording Friday, Rebecca Black has gone on to release numerous new songs, each better than the last by all accounts. - She has performed in some rather impressive venues including the House of Blues, the Tonight Show and a cameo appearance in a rather popular Katy Perry music video. - She has more than 330,000 subscribers on YouTube. Her most recent cover video has over 11,000,000 views. She did that without a worldwide army of detractors. Just a song. So let's make sure we take a balanced look at what she's accomplished and remember she did it all before she was legally allowed to vote." Someone added that her personal youtube channel has 1.1M subscribers. And roughly make $2-4? per 1K views on avg on Youtube? Not sure how it is in late 2015 and for different thing. #memes #commentary #charity #selfless #viral #kindness #inspirational #pub
"Gates has a net worth of $86.8 billion on the Bloomberg Billionaires Index. He would be worth $150 billion if he hadn’t given away almost 700 million Microsoft Corp. shares and $2.9 billion of cash and other assets to charity, according to an analysis of his publicly disclosed giving since 1996. The index numbers are based on the close of trading in New York Wednesday. And if not for more than a decade of donating Berkshire Hathaway Inc. shares to charity, Warren Buffett, who is ranked No. 3 in the index with $80.6 billion, would be right behind Gates with $135 billion. Bezos, who passed Gates for a few hours earlier this summer, has a net worth of $85.3 billion, according to the Bloomberg index, a daily ranking of the world’s 500 richest people." -- "Both Gates, 61, and Buffett, 87, have done most of their giving through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, which aims to improve global issues like health care and poverty. The foundation has made $41 billion in direct grants, including to GuideStar, and holds assets worth $40.3 billion, according to the charity’s website." #charity #boss_peeps #billionaires #info #tidbits #hobbies #pub
