How to get access to this writing? “Throughout his writings, what Frantz Fanon calls the colonized subject’s “reality” is really his lived experience. That experience, especially in the latter chapters of Black Skin, White Masks, alternates between outright invisibility and the “crushing objecthood” of being seen only as a black body. This is the objecthood that Fanon experiences as fixing him in the white gaze, and preempting him as an individual subject. Thus Fanon sees in the Lordship and Bondage (or master and slave) relation of G. W. F. Hegel’s Phenomenology the life-endangering, yet life-affirming risk that the slave must take in order to transcend the reality that the other has imposed on him—the reality of being seen and known by the master strictly as an object. What the slave wants in instigating conflict with the master is thus to reoccupy a place in the other’s reality—to reassert one’s place within the reality of reciprocal, mutual recognition between subjects. This is the fundamental reality of which Fanon writes in the relentless self-analysis that is Black Skin, White Masks, which he expands in The Wretched of the Earth to encompass the Algerian Revolution and, by extension, the whole of the colonized world.”

“Slavery appears as an ambivalent concept in Hegel’s work which at once objectivizes the principles of the rational state and goes against them. The aim of this chapter is twofold: (i) to adumbrate Hegel’s dialectic and teleological narratives of world history and (ii) to explore Fanon’s critique of Hegel. Fanon lays bare the ethnocentrism inherent in the dialectic. In Black Skin, White Masks, he shows that color is a factor in the dialectic. In The Wretched of the Earth, he discounts the teleological narratives of progress for their complicity in Europe’s colonial project. Fanon identifies an otherness which is not situated within the dialectic, a difference which cannot be synthesized and digested by world history and which Hegel uses to justify historical slavery.”

One of the most common misconceptions about philosophy is that philosophical views are just opinions and hence any view is just as good (or bad) as any other. This article attempts to show why the above is not necessarily correct. #contradiction #smug #philosophy #deep #pub

"Do you believe that your past determines your future? This is not an idle question of philosophical theory. To the extent that you belive that the past determines the future, you will tend to allow yourself to be a passive vessel that does not actively change its course. Such beliefs are responsible for magnifying many people's inertia. Perhaps, ironically, the ideology behind those beliefs was laid down by the three great geniuses of the nineteenth century: Darwin, Marx, and Freud."
