Article says "When people write critically about Facebook, they often say that “you are the product being sold,” but I think that by now we all get that...Thus it is a critical choice of any adult as to where they will perform their free labor. Tens of millions of people made a decision to spend their time with the simple, mobile photo-sharing application that was not Facebook because they liked its subtle interface and little filters. And so Facebook bought the thing that is hardest to fake. It bought sincerity." This is complete BS. As commenter, TEDPAVLIC, states, "wasn't the original (sincere?) point of Instagram was to be bought by a company like FB? They weren't making any money. They were just developing good mobile software (whose web presence depended on _other_ websites) that could be easily plugged into a larger beast. Seems to me like they were begging to be bought. I'm guessing there was a decent return on that investment. So is Instagram that "sincere?" Wasn't Instagram meant for exactly this?" #stupidity #disingenuous #lies #sheeple #lemmings #social #media #mass #journalism #bullshit #selling #out #instagram #Facebook #pub

Retort to The Atlantic's article (http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2011/01/the-rise-of-the-new-global-elite/8343/?single_page=true) "It could be argued that a quarter or so of the super-rich coming from ordinary backgrounds is sufficient to justify The Atlantic’s contention that they are more meritocratic than their predecessors. Firstly there have always been people who made a fortune from nothing: this is not new. More fundamentally, just a quarter coming from ordinary backgrounds still means that those whose parents are very rich are (at least) hundreds of times more likely to be in the elite themselves than someone from an ordinary family. Some meritocracy!" #retort #independent #journalism #blog #article #meritocracy #plutocracy #status #class #money #wealth #social #divide #peer #pub

A prime example of how bad tech "journalism" is. Half of this article is basically PR writing. And so a lot of that ends up being wrong or too puffy. Like where they say it is like whatsapp when this app is nothing like whatsapp at all. #circlejerk #bullshit #journalism #tech #pub

Seems like it was originally titled "Tell creepy men online about how you feel" or something of that nature. Generalizes a bunch of stuff like only men look at naked female celeb pics, and reddit is filled with mysogynists. Article then goes after specific people on Twitter who aren't that big or anything. Sometimes their examples of hypocrisy are off base too (like not wanting the government spying on you in real time via your webcam is hypocritical when you view private but now widely available pics of celebs taken by a camera). #bad_job #examples #i_am_benevolent_pattern #journalism #moral_outrage #pandering #pub

reinventing itself as a "location intelligence company for business"...."In the spring of 2016, Foursquare CEO Jeff Glueck went on CNBC to make a bold prediction: Chipotle comparable sales would fall by 29 percent in its first quarter.....Two weeks after Glueck’s appearance on CNBC, the Mexican eatery reported sales had fallen 29.7 percent from a year earlier....Three of the top five hedge funds are using Foursquare data to give them an investing edge." ----- Again though actual Foursquare money or stats is barely there. The article repeats twice the goal is $100M in revenue for 2017. No indication if it is realistic, has a good chance of happening, etc. No mention of 2016 revenue or numbers. So I mean come on! What we do know is "And inside Foursquare, Glueck has effectively redefined how to measure its own success. The company managed to raise $45 million in 2016, reportedly at half the $650 million valuation it commanded in 2013. Glueck won’t comment on that. He simply says the company was misunderstood, and now investors recognize that it’s a location intelligence company -- something that should be measured the same way as a services-as-a-software or programmatic advertising firm, which command a fraction of the multiples of sexy social media companies. With the new funding round, Glueck crafted a fresh “cap table,” which means the distribution of ownership was reconstituted. (That’s often the case when a company raises money in a “down round.”)" #startups #revenue #foursquare #boss #machine_learning #data_analytics #data_driven #data_mining #revenue_model #journalism #year_2017 #pub
